Every day in schools and homes across America, children are asked to “focus”, “concentrate”, “listen”, “pay attention”. But as teachers and parents, how often do we take the time and effort to teach our kids HOW to focus? And would we even know how if we wanted to?

At Power Brain, we teach our students hundreds of physical and mental exercises to train them how to improve their focus and strengthen their attention span. Following the 5 step Brain Education System Training, we begin with physical exercises designed to improve the mind-body connection while stimulating increased blood, oxygen and energy circulation to the brain.

We teach a variety of fun and challenging mental coordination exercises – which teach methods to actualize the neuroscience concept of “neuroplasticity”. Neuroplasticity basically teaches us that we can change and improve the way our 100 billion brain cells communicate with one another, thereby creating a more efficient and powerful brain.

Becoming Focused and Efficient

As you may know, the right hand is controlled by the left hemisphere of the brain, and the left hand is controlled by the right hemisphere. Power Brain training offers hundreds of exercises that require communication and cooperation between the two sides of the brain to help our students literally build a new road – called a synapse – between their brain cells.

When these exercises feel too challenging, we teach our students three tips to promote resilience:

1) Smile! When we smile, our brain releases endorphins, hormones that help our brain process information better.
2) Breathe out! usually when we learn something difficult, we become tense. This inhibits the flow of oxygen and energy to the brain. So breathe out and relax; and
3) Send a positive message to promote self-efficacy – “I can do it!”

Attention cannot be forced especially for kids. Even if it is forced for a short while, it cannot be maintained. The key to voluntary focus and attention is Interest. The most common reason why kids lose interest in a task is because they perceive it to be too difficult. Such simple tools and exercises as smiling and deep breathing are remarkably effective in dealing with these perceived challenges.

In Power Brain training, we teach our kids a great motto: “My brain loves challenges!” And each class, we give our students a variety of physical and mental challenges to build their brain power and improve their focus. So the next time your child’s teacher asks the class to focus, your child will know exactly what that means.
